So, we are here to guide you with 10 ways to protect your ears from hearing loss. Most of us are exposed to loud sounds and environmental noise pollution in our daily lives. Furthermore, Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in young adults.

Noise pollution can slowly deteriorate your hearing ability. Further, you may experience hearing difficulty only when the hearing loss has progressed. Furthermore, remember the only treatment for progressive hearing loss is using hearing aids.

  1. Use Ear Protective Aids

Use earplugs, earmuffs, or noise cancellation devices to protect your ears. Further, if you’re working in an environment with loud noise and machines it is mandatory to use these devices. These aids will protect your ears from sound exposure.

  1. Turn down the volume

Most of us listen to music or watch television. Always, make sure to listen at a low or comfortable volume. Turn down the volume of your music on your headphones. So, if you’re listening to music at a volume so high that you can’t hear environmental sounds, you need to turn it down. Further, if the person sitting next to you can hear your music, you know you’re risking your ear’s hearing loss. If you need to raise your voice to speak above the sound, you need to turn down the volume first.

  1. Use Headphones in concerts and clubs

Do you go partying often? If so, you must surely be exposed to loud music at the events. Request a headphone at the concert or club to listen to and enjoy the music. Further, these reduce the risk of hearing loss. These days there are also silent discos which offer this facility. You can party, enjoy yourself by listening to music at a comfortable loudness in your headphone. Hence, party safely by conserving your hearing.

  1. Practice hearing detox

How often do we give our ears rest? Almost never! Hence, practice hearing detox for a few minutes after exposing your ears to loud sounds. A study has revealed, you need 16 hours of silent rest after listening to 100dB loud sound for 2 hours. For example, at a club. When you give recovery time for your ears, you protect them from permanent damage. Further, if you’re a DJ and working at a venue, use headphones at low volume output. This will make sure to protect your ears.

  1. Set a volume limit

Make sure to set a volume limit on your device. In other words, the volume should be no more than 60% of the total output.

Never put anything inside your ears or ear canal. Do not use earbuds, swabs, water to clean your ears. Our ears are capable of self-cleaning. So, if you feel your ears are blocked, go to a doctor to remove the excess ear wax.

  1. Get your hearing tested

We all regularly visit the dentist every year. How many of us go to an Audiologist? No one! Hence, it is always best to get your hearing tested every year after the age of 18 years. Especially if you are working in a high noise environment such as a factory, club, or at the traffic signal. Therefore, early detection can help save your ears. So, get a hearing test/ audiometry done once a year.

  1. Adopt a healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle can keep half the diseases away. Hence, exercise daily so keep the blood pumping in all your body parts including the ears. This will nourish and protect your ears.

  1. Be aware of heredity hearing loss

If you or anyone in your family has a history of hearing loss, be informed. Heredity hearing loss accounts for 50% of hearing loss in new born babies. Hence, neonatal hearing screening is a must for new born infants. The earlier it is detected, the best it is treated.

  1. Do not self-medicate

Hearing loss can also be caused due to certain medicines/ drugs. Hence, always consult a doctor before taking any medication.
