Voice Care Tips for Children

A healthy voice is key to good communication. In this blog, we will discuss some voice care tips for children. Do you often feel your child’s voice does not sound normal? Does your child shout and scream frequently? Improper use of our voice can cause harm to our vocal folds. Voice issues are very common in adults and in children. Hence, we have to be cautious when to comes to our children.

Typically, we all brush our teeth daily, wash our faces,s, and shower to take care of ourselves. It is very important that we teach our children to practice healthy voice habits too. So, here are some voice care tips for children.

Voice Care Tips for Children

  1. Encourage your child to take short periods of voice rest during the day. This can range between 20-30 minutes depending on your child.
  2. Play quiet games and activities with your child. You may do a silent reading or listening to music or playing a board game with your little one.
  3. Remind them to get closer to the person before speaking. Instead of shouting from a distance.
  4. Motivate them to speak softly at normal vocal loudness.
  5. Prompt them to turn down the volume of tv or radio before they speak.
  6. Teach turn-taking in a conversation. So that they do not raise their voices to talk over the other person.
  7. Tell them to slow down while they are talking. This makes sure your child has good breath support and keeps their vocal folds healthy.
  8. If your child is playing in a group or in a park, tell them to call out to the other person by clapping.
  9. Remind your child to drink water throughout the day. This provides nourishment to the vocal cords and keeps them hydrated and healthy.
  10. Always, encourage your child to sit in a good posture while they are talking. Sitting in an upright 90-degree posture will be beneficial.

Don’ts of Voice Care for Children

  • Discourage whispering and talking.
  • Do not encourage shouting and screaming.
  • Remind them not to clear their throat.
  • Prompt them to not talk loudly.
  • Avoid impersonations and mimicking people.

Most importantly, be a good role model and follow all voice care tips to encourage your child.
