Speech Tips for Elderly Family Member

“To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors”

– The Walker

All of us see elders around us, we know that they have difficulty communicating often. We will be sharing some speech tips for an elderly family member in today’s blog post. As age increases, speech and language deteriorate. This is due to muscle weakness, aging, hearing loss, visual issues, illness, and general health status. It is very crucial that you take some time out, to keep your loved one engaged. Speech and language stimulation will keep them active mentally and motivated. It will also give them a sense of purpose in life and to participate in social events.

Speech Tips for Elderly Family Member

  1. Engage in conversation with them often. Ask them to talk about their interests, life, and other life events.
  2. Sit with them and read a newspaper or a magazine.
  3. Play cards, Su-do-Ku, and other brain-stimulating games with them.
  4. Take them out to social gatherings and encourage them to meet and talk with people.
  5. Allow them space to build new friends and attend elderly support groups.
  6. Go on a walk with them and engage in conversations about things happening in society.
  7. Motivate them to talk slowly and in a quiet place when they want to communicate.
  8. Help them make shorter sentences for effective communication.
  9. Ask them to take breaths between sentences and while pausing. This will help to give better breath support.
  10. Encourage them to maintain eye contact with the listener to deliver their message effectively.
