Phonation

phonation in speech taking place in the larynx which is a delicate organ beneath the hyoid bone. it is the process by which the vocal folds in the throat produce voice. There are 2 pairs of vocal folds, True and False vocal folds. Voice is produced by the vibration of the true vocal folds. The true vocal folds lie between the major cartilage of the larynx, the thyroid cartilage. The vocal folds are joined together at the front of the larynx where they attach to the thyroid cartilage just below the ‘Adam’s Apple’.

The vocal folds are thicker in men than in women and thicker in adults than in children. This accounts for the difference in the pitch of men women and children. They are roughly lesser than 1 inch even in the large larynx of an adult male.

When we phonate, we draw the vocal folds together to close the glottis (space between the vocal  folds). Then as air pressure from the lungs begins to build up, the glottis is forced open which causes the vocal cords to join and vibrate hence producing voice. The joining of vocal folds in the centre is called Adduction and going away from the midline is called Abduction.

phonation in speech, The false vocal folds also called as ventricular folds can also be drawn together to produce voice. But this voice is very strained and tense. This type of harsh voice is very harmful for the health of the vocal tissues. This disorder is called as ventricular dysphonia. It is a rare condition which happens when the true vocal folds are damaged
