MBBS: A candidate with a speech and language disability is permitted to pursue medical education by the Supreme Court

A candidate with a substantial speech and language handicap is now able to pursue an MBBS degree according to a ruling by the Supreme Court. This ruling nullifies earlier rules that prohibited those with disabilities greater than 40% from pursuing medical study.

The candidate’s admission was ordered by a three-judge bench presided over by Justice BR Gavai, following the conclusion of a court-appointed medical board that the candidate was capable of finishing the MBBS program.

The case brings to light persistent conflicts between legislation pertaining to disability rights and current medical education rules. The petitioner said that the more recent Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016 was at odds with the Graduate Medical Education Regulation of 1997, which established the 40% disability criterion. The decision highlights how important it is for medical education to have a more inclusive and nuanced approach to disability.

Mahit Sandhu won the gold medal in the women’s 50-meter rifle 3 positions (3P) on the last day of competition. In the men’s 25-meter standard pistol event, Abhinav Deshwal won gold, and Chetan Hanmant Sapkal took home the bronze.

Thirteen shooters from India competed in fifteen of the sixteen events held at the tournament, which drew 70 competitors from sixteen different nations.
