Pongal
Pongal, aka Thai Pongal, is a four day festival prevalent in South India, particularly celebrated by the Tamil community. It is a harvest festival observed to thank the Sun God for agricultural abundance. Families dress up, decorate and workshop the cow. Sweet rice/dal pongal and other dishes make the festival special. In addition, it is observed in the beginning of the month Thai according to Tamil solar calendar, and this is usually around January 14.
Makarsankranti
Makarsankranti is one of the major harvest Hindu festivals. It occurs on 14th January every year. Additionally, it has different names. Poush sôngkrānti in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka and Telangana, Sukarat in central India, Magh Bihu by Assamese, and Thai Pongal or Pongal by Tamils. Indeed, this auspicious festival marks the end of winter as well as the beginning of longer days on account of the sun’s northward journey, (also known as Uttarayan). Therefore, it is a special day for all!
