International Day of sign languages was celebrated

The International Day of Sign Language will be observed on September 23, 2022. The Hon’ble President of India, @rashtrapatibhvn, has expressed her best wishes for a successful celebration of the day and has encouraged the general public to learn and promote Indian Sign Language.

Presently, we have over 300+ different types of sign languages around the world. Sign languages don’t directly aim at translating spoken words into signs. Each sign language is a true language. Every sign language is unique. At the same time, it varies with its own vocabulary, grammar, hand position, and body movement. There is a lot of variation across these languages and across countries. This is because of cultural and geographical reasons.

Here is a brief about the most common sign languages around the world. Finding experienced and qualified interpreters for their daily communication throughout life is a very difficult task and also unaffordable.

Hence, a human to computer interaction system will prove to be a reliable and consistent solution in the future for deaf and dumb people.

Sending a positive message via Sign Language

The United Nations General Assembly designated September 23 as International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL). The theme for the day will be ‘Sign Languages Unite Us!’ Only two professional Indian Sign Language interpreters and one professional deaf Indian Sign Language teacher are available in Goa. While the hearing-impaired community does not seek empathy, they do seek equal opportunities in society.

When the United Nations General Assembly declared September 23 as International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), the goal was to raise awareness about sign languages and strengthen their status. Sign language has a long way to go in Goa because it is still relatively unknown.

It is worth noting, however, that the class of 2021 at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities in Mumbai had only seven students, two of whom were from Goa, Josefina Fernandes and Muskan Shaikh. Josefina Fernandes also won a gold medal, making them the state’s only two professional sign language interpreters. Consider speaking a language that only two people understand.
